How video creators climb, stall, and quietly climb back down
The editor’s
ladder.
Creators ask which editing software to buy. They are usually asking whether they are allowed to take themselves seriously yet. The answer they get back is a status verdict, priced in money, hours and credibility. And the move the category never talks about is the one down.
Read this as a decision map. Signal strength is qualitative and directional. It is not a population estimate.
Go to the opportunityNobody was asked. Everybody talked.
This report is built from public conversation rather than commissioned interviews. OPXP distilled YouTube comment threads and Reddit discussions into individually cited facts, then read the category from what creators volunteered with no moderator in the room, and no brand listening.
“Text based editing was my favourite CapCut feature, and I want to find it in a ‘professional’ NLE.”

You are reading a snapshot.
The brain is still learning.
Everything below is distilled from thousands of videos and Reddit threads about video editing, and the brain that holds it keeps ingesting. Full access lets you ask it the questions this report never asked, commission live interviews with real buyers, and build your own consumer brain on top of this one.

- Add your own interviewsAI-moderated voice interviews with the buyers you care about, fielded on demand.

One question.
Six people asking it.
“Which editing software should I use?” is the most repeated question in this category, and it is almost never a question about software. Select a creator to see what they are actually asking for.
“I just want someone to tell me which one to use.”
Permission to begin, disguised as a software recommendation.
Every thread returns a different answer, each one implying the others are wrong.
Answer the identity question, not the feature question
Nobody asks whether they are good enough. They ask which software to buy.
The advice given back is revealing: edit your own videos for a while first, one creator counsels, because you need to know what you like and do not like before you can hire anyone. The recommendation is not about tools at all. It is about earning the standing to judge.
“Edit your own content for a while first, since that knowledge is what you need to hire effectively.”Creator advice / on hiring an editor
- HobbyistPhone-first, judged as not yet committed
- CommittedPaid once, defends the choice on value
- SeriousCapability without a subscription
- EmployableWhat the market will actually accept
The ladder nobody
published, and everybody knows.
No brand drew this. Creators did, in their own words, using their own phrase: moving up. Select a rung to see what using it is read to mean.
Software is used as a hiring filter, not just a preference.
A creator hiring an editor turned down every applicant whose samples were made in CapCut. An editor in Los Angeles reports their team delivers in Premiere because that is what the team and the clients use, while conceding Resolve is the stronger tool for colour. In major media markets the accepted list is Premiere and Avid. In smaller markets it is not. The verdict changes with the postcode, which tells you it was never really about the software.
“Major markets require knowing Premiere and Avid, not just Resolve. Smaller markets do not.”Professional editor / r/davinciresolve

The sections above are the shape of the video editing category. What follows is the part a brand would act on, and it is free — we would just like to know who is reading it.
- What each rung actually costs, in money and in hours
- The descent: why experienced editors quietly move back down
- What creators think about AI, and what nobody in the category has claimed
Ask the category brain instead of reading about it.
This report is a snapshot of a brain that keeps learning. Every claim here traces back to a cited source, and the same brain answers questions this report never asked.
